Fall is the first panel of a series of four titled "Four Seasons". This first panel began with a simple charcoal drawing of a woman done by the deceased artist, and my former son-in-law Brandon Crotty. I wanted to incorporate one of his sketches into an original painting of mine, and when I came across one he had done in an open studio of a woman sitting with her knees up and arms around them I knew it was the one. When I sketched it onto the canvas her left arm seemed to be masculine, so I created a man next to her. The rest of the composition flowed from there, with the appearances of a nautilus, a labyrinth, and water to further capture the idea of being encapsulated. This became Spring, when all of life is like a seed.
I rediscovered my love for art and found my passion for oil painting after being diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Fibromyalgia in 2005. Having previously worked as an audiologist and later in pharmaceuticals, chronic disease forced me to abandon my career to stay home and rest. What I didn't know was that a new opportunity was blooming. During this challenging period of change I was encouraged by my son-in-law, a very talented artist, to "just paint", but shortly thereafter we lost him to suicide. Having inherited the contents of his studio, his influence is present in my work.
